Walls, render & house washing
Render Cleaning Falkirk
Render has become one of the most common exterior finishes on newer builds across Falkirk and Denny, and it comes with a specific cleaning challenge: it looks fantastic when it's new and shows every bit of algae, streaking, and general staining once a few years of Scottish weather have had their way with it. Steam King cleans render across Falkirk and Denny using a soft wash approach suited specifically to this finish.

The easiest finish to damage
Why Render Needsa Careful Approach
Render is more delicate than brick, stone, or concrete, and it's genuinely one of the easiest exterior finishes to damage with the wrong cleaning method. High-pressure water directed at render can strip the surface texture, force moisture behind the render layer, or cause visible patchiness that's far more obvious and harder to fix than the algae staining it was meant to remove. This is why we use soft washing as standard on all render types, a specialist cleaning solution given proper time to break down growth, followed by a low-pressure rinse rather than high-pressure water alone.
Render systems
Render TypesWe Clean
K-Rend
, one of the most widely used render systems on newer properties, cleaned using our standard soft wash approach to avoid damaging the textured finish.
Monocouche render
, a single-coat, through-coloured render system that shows staining clearly given its typically smooth or lightly textured surface, cleaned carefully to avoid patchiness.
Silicone render
, generally more resistant to algae growth than older render types due to its water-repellent properties, but still benefits from periodic cleaning to remove general grime and any staining that does develop.
Acrylic render
, a flexible, crack-resistant render finish that we clean with the same low-pressure, soft wash principles as other render types.
Coloured render
, where uneven cleaning can lead to visible patchiness far more obviously than on a plain white or grey finish, since any inconsistency in the clean stands out clearly against the colour. We take particular care with coloured render to achieve an even result across the whole elevation.
Algae, streaking, lichen
What Builds Upon Render
Algae, particularly green staining on shaded or north-facing elevations, is the most common issue we see on render. Streaking below window sills, cill lines, and roof edges, caused by water runoff carrying dirt down the render surface, is also very common and can look worse than the general grime across the rest of the wall. Lichen appears less frequently but can develop on older or more textured render finishes over time.
The method
Our Process
- We assess the render type, colour, and condition before starting, since different render systems genuinely respond differently to cleaning and we adjust our approach accordingly. We apply an eco-friendly cleaning solution suited to the specific render, giving it time to break down algae and staining, then rinse at low pressure to finish the job evenly across the whole elevation. We work section by section on larger properties to maintain a consistent result rather than risking uneven patches.
Algae and Lichen on Render
If algae or lichen is a persistent, recurring problem on a particular elevation, usually a shaded, north-facing wall, this is covered in more specific depth on our algae and lichen removal page, including options for slowing down regrowth after cleaning.
Why Render Cleaning Matters Beyond Appearance
Render is designed to protect the wall structure underneath from moisture, and while a clean is primarily cosmetic, persistent algae and moisture-holding growth left unaddressed for years isn't doing the render any favours either. Regular, careful cleaning is a sensible part of general property maintenance, not just a way to make the house look nicer.
Pricing
Render cleaning is priced based on the size of the property, the render type, and how badly affected it currently is. A small, lightly affected elevation is a different job to a full property with heavy algae streaking built up over several years. We'll give you a proper quote once we've seen the property or had a description and photos.

Areas We Cover

High-pressure washing carries a real risk of damaging render, which is why we use a soft wash, low-pressure approach as standard on all render types.
Not if done properly. We work methodically, section by section, specifically to avoid the uneven patchiness that rushed or inconsistent cleaning can leave on coloured render.
Most render benefits from cleaning every 2 to 3 years, sooner for heavily shaded elevations prone to algae growth.
Generally yes, silicone render's water-repellent properties make it more resistant to algae, though it will still need periodic cleaning over time.
Yes, we work carefully around windows, doors, and any trim, adjusting our approach where different materials meet.
